TPLO Recovery & Rehabilitation in Dogs
What is TPLO Surgery?
Tibial Plateau Leveling Osteotomy (TPLO) is a common surgical procedure used to stabilize the knee after a cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) tear. Instead of replacing the torn ligament, TPLO alters the biomechanics of the knee joint to allow for pain-free movement. This surgery is often recommended for medium-to-large breed dogs and active dogs that require strong, long-term joint stability.
TPLO Recovery Timeline
Recovery from TPLO surgery occurs in phases, with a focus on healing, strengthening, and returning to normal function.
Phase 1: Early Healing (Weeks 1-4)
Strict rest with limited movement
Short, controlled leash walks
Pain management and swelling reduction
Passive range of motion exercises as tolerated
Phase 2: Strength & Mobility (Weeks 5-8)
Gradual increase in controlled exercise
Strengthening exercises to support the knee
Continued monitoring for any signs of discomfort
Beginning balance and proprioception training
Phase 3: Return to Activity (Weeks 9-12+)
Further progression of strengthening and endurance exercises
Reintroduction to normal activity levels under guidance
Final assessments for full recovery and safe return to play
How Can Rehabilitation Help?
Rehabilitation is crucial for maximizing recovery after TPLO surgery. Without proper rehab, dogs may develop muscle loss, joint stiffness, or compensatory injuries in other limbs.
Rehab benefits include:
✔️ Faster recovery and improved surgical outcomes
✔️ Reduced risk of re-injury
✔️ Strengthening of the affected limb
✔️ Prevention of compensatory issues in other joints
✔️ Restoring balance and coordination
